First Steps to Authoring

Congratulations on your decision to publish your knowledge in the Forest Encyclopedia Network.  Let's quickly step you through the preliminary administrative steps you will need to complete before you can submit new material to the system.

Step 1.  If you have not already joined FEN, then you must first do that.  Go to the FEN Home page (www.forestencyclopedia.net) and click on the "Join" link in the lower left side of the screen.  Then simply fill in the form and submit it.  Be sure to remember your login in name and password!

Step 2.  Go ahead and Log In.  Once logged in, select the "Workspace" link to move to your workspace.  At the top of the workspace will be a link that invites you to submit an application to become an author in FEN.  Be sure to supply your email address and a short description of what you want to do.  Expect to get an email back from the FEN Executive Editor with a request for some more information, such as your curriculum vitae and some more discussion of what your itentions are.  You will then be given author priveleges to edit one or a small number of pages.  These pages are typically the parent pages under which your own contribution will be developed.

Step 3.  Finally, before you can begin adding new knowledege to FEN, you will need to fill out your "Biographical" page.  In your workspace in the upper right hand corner of the page, you will see "Add New Content" followed by a selection box.  Make sure Biography is displayed in this selection box and then click on the "Add Content" button.  This step will bring up the Biography form for you to fill out.  By creating a biographical page, your name will be entered into the ranks of the authors of FEN.  As part of the process of creating your biographical information, you will be invited to upload a picture of yourself.  The following guidelines are provided for completing the biography form.

    • Contact information - Provide the contact information in regards to your affiliation with the encyclopedia network.
    • Current employment - List the title of your current position and your employer. Also include the areas of expertise affiliated with your current position.
    • Education - List each degree bytitle, the university or college, and the date of the degree. For example: M.S. Forest Management, University of Florida, 1995.
    • Experience - List the dates, location, and employer in your professional experience.

Step 4. The encyclopedia requires that cookies be enabled in your internet browser configurations.  (List of browsers and how to enable cookies with each).

That's it!  Congratulations, you have now done everything you need in order to author in FEN.

Your next step should be to read the section of Help that will teach you how to create new content in FEN.  Good Luck!
