Funding for the original development work was provided by the USDA National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program (Grant No. 99-35108-8553) and the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station, 2000 - 2004.  Since that time, each new encyclopedia project has contributed funding to maintain and expand the capabilities of the software infrastructure of FEN.
