Calculating Temperature from Fireline Intensity

Expected temperatures at any height above a surface fire can be estimated or calculated from ambient temperature and fireline intensity (Van Wagner 1973,1975):

BT = 3.9 (I)2/3 / h

where:

  • T = temperature rise above ambient (C)
  • I = fireline intensity (kW/m)
  • h = height above ground (m)
