Diagram of factors contributing to forest susceptibility to wildfire

Many factors contributing to forest susceptibility to wildfire were set in motion decades before ignition. However, the role of atmospheric pollution, specifically increased O3 exposure and nitrogen (N) deposition significantly contributes to forest susceptibility to wildfire via increased tree drought stress (with subsequent increase in successful bark beetle attack) and deeper, more recalcitrant litter layers.
