Density of Yellow Pine and Hemlock in the Southern Appalachian Mountains (based on Whittaker 1956).

Figure 1 depicts the distribution of hemlock and pine density in the southern Appalachian Mountains. The highest density of hemlocks are found in flats, draws, and ravines at an elevation of 3000'-4500' whereas the highest densities of yellow pines are found on ridges and peaks between elevations of 0 and 3000'.
