Silvics of major species
Silvics is the study of the life history and general characteristics of forest trees and stands as a basis for the practice of silviculture, or manipulation of the forest to obtain desired benefits. Silvics deals with the principles underlying growth and development of single trees and of the forest as a biological unit (Smith 1986). The following sections provide links to Silvics of North America (USDA Forest Service 1990) for hardwood and conifer species found in the southern Appalachians.
