Issues that Affect Sustainability

Authored By: J. L. Chamberlain, M. Predny

Sustainable forest management is built on the principle that current societal needs be met without prejudice to future generations, or to the forests abilities to rejuvenate and maintain their existing stature. The concept of sustainability embraces three fundamental standards. First, management activities respect social and cultural needs, and are equitable and fair to stakeholders. Second, the economic impact to communities remains equal or improves, and shows signs of continued positive growth. Finally, the ecological impact is benign, if not positive, toward the long-term sustainability of the biological diversity and the balance of relationships within forest ecosystems. This section discusses social, economic, and ecological issues that affect sustainable management of forests for non-timber products.
